Personally, I try as much as possible not to gift cologne unless it's specifically on someone's wish list. I say this from personal experience of receiving colognes (as gifts). Either I get a cologne that I usually wear seasonally or worst a scent that I don't really care for.

And yes, it's the season of giving and the thought is what counts. But to save you the trouble of exchanging your gift and avoid any awkward reactions opening your third bottle of the same cologne. You should let people know (don't demand) that colognes are not on your wish list this holiday. That's what I did last Christmas and actually was thanked for making their holiday gift shopping a little easier.
